SUSANNE AND CLAUS ROTTENBACHER
OUT OF THIS WORLD
Project space Münzmeisterhaus
Ketschengasse 7, 96450 Coburg
Susanne and Claus Rottenbacher are two observers who, through different media—photography, installation, architecture, and sculpture—explore and capture space, achieving fundamentally distinct results. The two artists not only share the same address and studio; they live and work together, engaging in a continuous dialogue about their art through mutual support, assistance, intimacy, and observation.
The exhibition “OUT OF THIS WORLD” at the historic Münzmeisterhaus in Coburg features the atmospheric photographs of Claus Rottenbacher alongside Susanne Rottenbacher’s light installations, each evoking realms beyond the ordinary—castles, gods, and spirits.
Claus Rottenbacher first encountered Erkersreuth Castle in Selb, once home to the Rosenthal porcelain family, and felt an indomitable creative energy within its walls: “It felt as if someone with an unwavering drive for art and the future had left their mark here.” Inspired by this experience, he created the Rosenthal’s Castle photo series in 2024 for Kulturerbe Bayern, now on view for the first time at “OUT OF THIS WORLD”.
In harmony with the castle's surreal aura, Susanne Rottenbacher’s light installation Jupiter and Io, 02, installed in the main hall, conjures a sense of mythical presence. The piece, part of a three-part series, transforms light into a flowing, spatial rhythm that adapts organically to its surroundings, embodying her hallmark style of dissolving light within space. At the entrance, guests are greeted by Spiritelli, vibrant works by Susanne Rottenbacher, setting the stage for a journey through ethereal forms and dynamic spaces.
