JAEGER ART is pleased to exhibit the current works of Kristian Schuller for the first time in its premises at Brunnenstraße 161. In collaborative projects with his wife Peggy, he has further developed his distinctive visual language, focusing particularly on the play of light and shadow.
In his photographs, you can perceive the fascination of the eternal "Cherchez la femme".
Growing up in Romanian communism, Kristian's repugnance for the then ever-present and very dusty gray in gray manifested itself already as a child. Colors and light have fascinated him ever since, as have the people who respond to this gray with humor and improvisation.
Visitors of this exhibition can expect Schuller's typical powerful expressions of color, but this time he approaches his subject particularly cautiously, creating something mystical through the deliberate use of blur, the play of light and dark, and by turning away from sharply drawn portraits, leaving the viewer plenty of room for interpretation.
He himself says of this new approach to his photography:
"I prefer to dream myself into the unknown than to have everything presented to me in radiant light. The silhouette of a woman is enough to make a whole movie run in my imagination. I have the great fortune to work with wonderful people whose strong personalities are both inspiration and mission for me. It doesn't matter if they are well-known personalities like the recently portrayed Cate Blanchett, Penélope Cruz or Lea Seydoux, or if they are unknown, fantastic personalities. Beauty can only work in interaction with the character. Everything else is empty to me."
Kristian Schuller came to Germany with his family from Transylvania / Romania at the age of seven. As the son of a dramaturge and director and an art teacher, he grew up in the environment of a Theater stage and diverse creative influences. He studied photography with F. C. Gundlach and fashion design with Vivienne Westwood at the University of the Arts in Berlin. Although he ultimately chose a career as a photographer after graduation, both disciplines continue to shape his artistic identity today. His wife Peggy is an art director and fashion designer who works with Kristian as a team. They met in the class of Vivienne Westwood, with whom Peggy also studied. Her designs and creative input play an important role in his work. After years in Paris and New York, Kristian Schuller has now returned to Berlin with his family.
